The main application of a conductive coating on an in-flight device is mainly used to combat the effects of Electro-static discharge. It is a really big problem in aircraft, with no grounding static can build up and dissipate along metal conductors, if this is not suppressed or dissipated it could lead to sensitive equipment being knocked out or worst still an on-board fire.
The products we use are applied to a higher level of conductivity not suitable for shielding purposes but are there to control the effects of static discharge and assists the dissipation of electricity.
The use of light weight materials in the production of seating has lead to the increase in decorative finishing within an aircraft. The materials applied are either to composite honeycomb formed seating, which involves the application of fillers and primers before applying base coats and lacquers, all of which are CAA approved for low smoke and fire retardancy, the process is labour intensive and skilled. Other products are applied to plastic castings, vacuum formed or injection moulded parts, using different finishing effects adopted by airliners such as suede, soft feel, leatherette and textured.
